About me

ABOUT ME

I am currently a BA Hons Fashion student studying at the University for the creative arts, Epsom in my third year. My design focus and USP have been nostalgia and fantasy elements. I design with the purpose to create designs that empower individuals in their own bodies and inspire confidence. I believe my exposure to Cultural diversity has given me a broader perspective of the world, something I find captivating, and which influences the way I conceptualize my designs. As a humanitarian, I try focusing on cultural and societal issues as a way of expression to evoke feelings as I believe you should strive to be the change you want to see in the world. Sustainability is therefore of importance to me as fashion/textiles is one of the leading contributors for pollution and climate change, therefore I am interested in using upcycled and repurposed fabrics and garments. Therefore, have used in my latest collection natural dyes and upcycled garments like knitwear.

MY WORK

My work is often influenced by any hyper fixations I have at a time. I find myself intrigued with the idea of 'what if?' my projects are often filled with that child-like wonder and imagination we try to hold onto as we get older because it makes things fun and light-hearted. Provoking theories and nostalgia combined with my observations of society as a  young black woman.

RETRO FUTURE

My final year design concept is called Retrofuture, for my collaboration with the brand Acne Studios. The concept explores the theme of retro-futurism- an art movement that was dedicated to showing the creative arts depictions of the future from an earlier time period and futurism explains the science bent on anticipating what is to come. It often has science-fiction elements that symbolize the human imagination and what we imagine could be there in the future which is surreal.

While exploring this theme I looked at films and tv shows like the marvel cinematic universe, the Back to the Future Trilogy, buck rogers and the day the earth stood still. These types of movies have a fantasy element which is one of my top genres because it allows me to imagine. It is also nostalgic and magical.

For this concept I wanted to engage with current and future trends to appeal for my target market young adults, however there was heavy inspiration from the ‘space age ‘ more specifically for my silhouettes as more youth become inspired by the era. The space-age was an era that started in the late 1950’s and represents the time in society when peoples interest in space became popular and the exploration of space and space technology was happening at this time which the cultural developments were influenced by these events.
